William Kentridge is a South African artist best known for his prints, drawings, and animated films. These are constructed by filming a drawing, making erasures and changes, and filming it again. He continues this process meticulously, giving each change to the drawing a quarter of a second to two seconds' screen time. A single drawing will be altered and filmed this way until the end of a scene. These palimpsest-like drawings are later displayed along with the films as finished pieces of art.
The exhibition “Enough and more than enough” focuses on his stage work, including theatre, opera and performance, and takes this perspective to approach his sculptural projects. The cornerstone of the show is cemented by Woyzeck on the Highveld (1992), Faustus in Africa! (1995) and Ubu and the Truth Commission (1997), and the operas Il ritorno d’Ulisse (The Return of Ulysses, 1998), The Nose (2010), Lulu (2015) and Wozzeck (2017). The selection constitutes an opportunity to put in place a transversal survey which brings into focus certain constants throughout Kentridge’s work.
